THE VLADIMIR PUTIN FIREPLACE

The VLADIMIR PUTIN FIREPLACE

A friend came to see me yesterday and she reminded me that when about 10 years ago we had our gas fire disconnected, and a new fireplace built in order to burn wood, that I had called it the VLADIMIR PUTIN fireplace, because, I had said, I wanted to have an alternative source of heat when Putin turned the gas supply off to Europe.

I’m ashamed to say that I cheered when I heard that the pride of the Russian navy had been sunk by the Ukrainians and now lies at the bottom of the Black Sea.

However we have sustained a few losses of our own.

Should Boris be forced to resign?   I disapprove of his  behaviour but I do not think he should resign over a little party.   He was probably surprised by it (it was for his birthday.)   The people at the party  had all been working long hours and very hard in close proximity so for them the party did not represent a very big additional risk.   He had felt it would be churlish to refuse.

The aspect of his lying to Parliament (and to us) when he said ‘No party took place’ when he knew that it had and that  he was at it, troubles me rather more, and in ordinary circumstances he would have to go for that.   He lies in his teeth: how can we ever believe anything he says.   Tony Blair lied to us too, and we have not forgiven him.  Boris will pay for this lie further down the line.   But right now, we’ve got other things to worry about.  Who else is there anyway?  Michael Gove?   Heavens preserve us!   Liz  Truss is a joke.   We’ll have to put up with Boris in the meantime, and just remember in everything he says that he lies and lies and is a villain.   Eventually someone will arrive who can replace him.

Turning our attention now to Rishi Sumak, I think there matters are different.    To hold an American Green Card while you are Chancellor of the British Exchecker is to my mind an unacceptable conflict of interest.   Do you intend to go and live there (your wife apparently wants to live in India) and if so, how does that influence your actions and statements.    I think that he should resign immediately.   Replacing him shouldn’t be a problem; there’s always some hitherto unheard of brilliant boffin in the background can step forward and impress us with his genius.

Most politicians lie all the time, but few of them who get found out survive.  Tony Blair did not resign but he paid a high price for his lack of truthfulness just the same.     But in the meantime, we have to support Boris, and, in whatever way we can, Ukraine.
